The first national coal reserve base in southwestern China's Sichuan province is on track to start commissioning by mid-May, local media reported.
The coal reserve project is aimed at ensuring stable supply and energy security during peak demand periods, especially in the summer.
The base, located in Gaoxin Logistics Park, Guang'an city, covers an area of 14.9 hectares. Starting construction from March 10, 2021, it is designed with a storage capacity of 1.2 million tonnes and a transshipment capacity of 10 million tonnes annually.
The project, upon commissioning, will serve as a coal supply pivot to cover the emergency needs in Sichuan and neighboring Chongqing.
Sichuan is the top hydropower producer in China. However, hydropower output was in a severe shortage in past two summers due to extreme hot and dry weather conditions, prompting the local government to raise coal use to ensure its energy security.
In August 2022, the province's hydropower reservoirs have dropped to half their normal levels, slashing generating capacity by more than 50%. This caused electricity cuts to businesses and households.
