U.S. Mar coal output down 21.9% YoY, EIA

The United States produced 40.61 million short tons (36.84 million tonnes) of coal in March 2024, down 21.9% from 51.98 million short tons a year ago and 5.2% from the previous month's 42.84 million short tons, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its Monthly Energy Review on April 25.

 

The U.S. exported 9.12 million short tons of coal in February 2024, rising 14.06% from the year-ago level of 7.99 million short tons and 8.42% from 8.41 million short tons a month ago, data showed.

 

Total coal exports amounted to 17.53 million short tons over the first two months this year, 15.8% higher than 15.14 million short tons a year ago.

 

The country consumed 45.67 million short tons of coal in January 2024, increasing 16.9% on the year and 25.9% month on month.

 

The power sector was estimated to consume 42.46 million short tons of coal in January, up 19.5% year on year; the industrial sector consumed 3.10 million short tons, falling 9.72% on the year; the commercial sector used 102,000 short tons, climbing 24.4% year on year.
