Nuclear power continues to rise in China's energy mix

China's nuclear power capacity is poised for continuous growth in the coming years, with its share in the country's energy mix expected to see a steady increase.

China is projected to expand its installed nuclear power capacity, which will contribute to 10% of the nation's total power output by 2035, according to the latest blue book released by the China Nuclear Energy Association on April 13.

This represents a significant increase from the 5% share observed in 2021 and is estimated to result in a reduction of 900 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The report indicates that by 2060, the share of nuclear power generation in China's energy mix is expected to reach 18%, aligning with the current average level among members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

In 2023, China's nuclear power projects under construction progressed steadily, with the launch of construction for five new nuclear power units. The investment in nuclear power construction reached 94.9 billion yuan ($13.11 billion) last year, marking the highest in five years.

CITIC Securities forecasts that the accelerated approval of nuclear power projects will stimulate growth in China's related industry chain, further facilitating the country's efforts to reduce carbon emissions ahead of schedule. Investments in new nuclear power plants are expected to reach 231 billion yuan by 2025.

Nuclear power is increasingly recognized as a carbon-free and cost-effective alternative in China's energy transition, with its significance growing in recent years.

China's energy policy is increasingly focused on nuclear power expansion, in line with trends observed in several European countries, where nuclear power has become increasingly important amidst diversification efforts away from Russian oil and gas.

China's nuclear generation capacity is expected to reach 145 GW in 2035, more than double the target level set for 2025.

In China's latest 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the government has set a target for nuclear generation capacity expansion to 70 GW by 2025.
