The United States produced 42.84 million short tons (38.86 million tonnes) of coal in February 2024, down 6.29% from 45.71 million short tons a year ago and 0.26% from the previous month's 42.95 million short tons, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its Monthly Energy Review on March 27.

The U.S. exported 8.41 million short tons of coal in January 2023, rising 17.8% from the year-ago level of 7.14 million short tons yet down 0.76% from 8.48 million short tons a month ago, data showed.

The country consumed 35.26 million short tons of coal in December 2023, declining 22.32% on the year yet increasing 6.87% month on month.

The power sector was estimated to consume 32.01 million short tons of coal in December, down 23.58% year on year; the industrial sector consumed 3.18 million short tons, falling 7.02% on the year; the commercial sector used 75,000 short tons, decreasing 14.77% year on year.

Total coal consumption came in at 427 million short tons in the full year of 2023, a 17.27% drop year on year. Of this, 387 million short tons were consumed by the power sector and 38.65 million short tons were used by the industrial sector, down 18.12% and 7.77% year on year, respectively.
