Mongolia's coal exports totaled 24.43 million tonnes over January-April 2024, increasing 28.27% from the year-ago level, according to the latest data from the Mongolian Customs General Administration (MCGA).
The export value amounted to $2.99 billion, falling 2.40% on the year, data showed.
MCGA didn't release the specific figure for April. Sxcoal calculated the exports at 6.77 million tonnes based on the overall exports published by the customs authority, up 28.59% year on year yet down 3.78% on the month.
The value of coal exports stood at $775 million in the same month, declining 5.26% on the year and 11.62% on the month, with the average price calculated at $114.40/t, down $40.87/t year on year and $10.15/t month on month. The majority of Mongolian coal exported was coking coal used for steel production.
All Mongolia coal was exported to China during the first four months this year. In April, coal shipments to China rose 28.60% on the year yet decreased 3.78% from the month prior to 6.77 million tonnes.
In April, mounting inventory pressure at supervision warehouses at the Ganqimaodu border port hampered coal inflows to China.
Over January-April, Mongolia exported 23.76 million tonnes of bituminous coal, up 26.93% on the year. Anthracite exports slumped 79.28% year on year to 20,200 tonnes, while that of other coal surged 181.23% from a year ago to 651,100 tonnes.
In April, Mongolia's bituminous coal exports were calculated at 6.57 million tonnes, up 27.20% from the previous year but down 4.32% from a month earlier; exports of anthracite were 5,900 tonnes, plummeting 79.81% on the year and 28.06% from March; other coal exports were 197,800 tonnes, a substantial 169.80% spike compared to the year-ago level and climbing 20.13% from the month before.
