Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports declined 5.23% on the year to 15.63 million tonnes in April, showed the latest data from Indian Ports Association.
The volume was also 8.65% lower than the month-ago level, data showed.
Thermal coal imports at these ports stood at 10.62 million tonnes, down 10.91% year on year (YoY) and 7.92% month on month (MoM), while coking coal imports came in at 5.01 million tonnes, rising 9.56% YoY yet falling 10.15% MoM.
Paradip port in East India received most thermal and coking coal among all these ports in April, at 4.14 million tonnes (0.15% YoY, -9.02% MoM) and 1.46 million tonnes (10.29% YoY, 28.01% MoM), respectively.
Imports at these ports totaled 192 million tonnes over the fiscal year 2023-24 (April 2023-Mar 2024), up 2.03% YoY. Thermal coal imports stood at 127 million tonnes, down 1.72% YoY, and coking coal imports at 64.94 million tonnes, up 10.24% YoY.
The total coal handling volume at the 12 ports reached 67.26 million tonnes in April, up 1.26% from 66.42 million tonnes a year ago.
India's 12 state-owned ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and Kandla.
