UK Jun thermal coal imports fall to 5-mth low
The UK imported 156,726 tonnes of thermal coal in June, the lowest amount since January, according to customs data released late August 10.
The June total was down 35% from May but up 102% from the year-ago month, which was the lowest monthly total since January 2012.
Australia's Aurizon sees good growth in coal after exiting freight
Coal rail operator Aurizon Holdings Limited had decided to quit its loss-making freight business, selling two units for A$220 million ($173.58 million) and closing a third arm, allowing it to focus on coal haulage, Reuters reported on August 14 citing the company as said.
Aurizon saw strong growth for its core coal business, which had been overshadowed by the freight business's failure to make a profit over all but three of the past 10 years, Chief Executive Andrew Harding said.
Coal India profit lags behind estimates on rising costs
Coal India, the world's largest producer of the fuel, reported a wider-than expected 23% drop in first-quarter net income as rising expenses continued to dent profitability at the state-owned company, Asian Review reported on August 14.
Consolidated net profit for the quarter ended June 30 was 23.51 billion rupees ($367 million), compared with 30.65 billion rupees a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Sales grew 4.3% to 205.68 billion rupees. Analysts were expecting a net income of 26.56 billion rupees in the quarter.
Colombia Jun coal exports slump 32.9pct on yr
Coal-rich Colombia exported 4.98 million tonnes of coal in June, slumping 32.92% from the preceding year and plummeting 60.06% month on month, showed data from Colombia National Department Administrative of Statistics.
In June, Colombia's coal exports valued $359 million, dropping 9.61% year on year down 55.34% from May.
Coal India to invest Rs 8,500 crore capital expenditure in FY2017-18
Coal India Ltd (CIL), which produces 84% of the country's total output of the mineral, has planned to invest Rs 8,500 crore ($1.32 billion) as capital expenditure in 2017-18, showed the company's latest annual report.
"The capital expenditure for the year 2017-18 has been set at (Rs) 8,500 crore," the miner said in its annual report.
Dalrymple Bay Jul coal exports to China up 38.69% YoY
Coal exports to China from the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) in Australia's Queensland increased 38.69% year on year and 25.13% month on month to 1.62 million tonnes in July, showed the latest data from DBCT Management.
The shipments to China in July hit a 24-month new high and were 61.7% higher than the 12-month rolling average of 1 million tonnes per month.
Corsa Coal output grows by 20% for fifth consecutive quarter
Improvement in metallurgical coal markets has pushed US-focused coal producer Corsa Coal to a second quarter profit, and marked the miner's fifth consecutive quarter of growth of 20% or greater in metallurgical coal sales volumes, Mining Weekly reported on August 17.
Pennsylvania-based Corsa reported optimistic net and comprehensive income of $4.6 million, or 0.03 per share, an increase of 157% from the a loss of $8 million of second quarter of 2016, or $0.10 per share.
Australian state lets South32 resume limited digging at Appin coal mine
Government regulators in an Australian state on August 16 cleared South32 to partially restart its Appin coal mine after workers were evacuated in June following a gas-leak scare.
"We've worked closely with the mine operator and we're now comfortable that the mine has put systems and controls in place to deal with the immediate safety issues and has a robust plan to address longer-term issues," New South Wales state chief compliance officer Anthony Keon said in a statement.
